Waste Medicines

Always use your medicine wisely.  Remember check your prescription before you leave the pharmacy.

A campaign aimed at reducing unnecessary medicine waste in Knowsley and surrounding areas has been launched.

NHS Knowsley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) estimates that £1.5 million is lost each year across the region through medicines waste alone.

The CCG have highlighted that £1.5 million that could potentially be saved each year across Knowsley and surrounding areas through better medicine management. The money which is saved could instead be spent on an additional 36 ward nurses, 17 doctors, 631 babies delivered and fund 14,965 days in hospital for someone with dementia per year.

This campaign encourages patients to only order what they need, return unwanted medicines to their pharmacy for safe disposal and not to stock-pile any medicines.

Reducing medicines waste is a priority for NHS Knowsley CCG, but we cannot do this alone. We need your help to stop medicines waste in Knowsley and reduce the cost of disposing of medicines. You can help us in the following ways:

ü  Only tick what you need

û  If you don’t need it, don’t order it

ü  Let your pharmacy or GP practice know if you have any medicines that you don’t need

ü  When in doubt about ordering your medication – just ask the pharmacist

Please help us to raise awareness of our waste medicine campaign as everyone has a part to play to reduce medicines waste.
